Internet Architecture Board. The IAB is the technical advisory group of ISOC that oversees the evolution of the Internet. The IAB supervises the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF), and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). See ISOC, IETF, IRTF, IANA. Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. IANA is responsible for assigning domain names, IP addresses, and protocol numbers. See Domain Name, IP, Protocol. Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN is a private, non-profit corporation that is responsible for IP addressing, space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root system server management functions. See TLD. Internet Engineering Task Force. IETF, under the supervision of IAB, defines standard Internet operating protocols, such as TCP/IP. The IETF is a large international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution of the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet. The capability of a website to respond to a user's input. See CGI. A means by which a user interacts with a program or utilizes an application. See GUI.
The capability of an image to appear gradually in a browser so that users can identify what the image will be once it is fully downloaded. A fuzzy outline of an image is gradually replaced by seven successive waves of bit streams that fill in the missing lines until the image arrives at its full resolution. Interlacing makes the graphic file larger. A decentralized, global computer network. See World Wide Web, Network, E-mail. Internet protocol. It specifies an addressing scheme that identifies each individual computer on a network. An IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods such as 207.158.192.40. It is also a communications protocol. See DNS, IANA, Protocol. Internet Relay Chat. An Internet protocol for exchanging text messages in real time among multiple simultaneous users. Internet Research Task Force. Under the direction of IAB, IRTF works to develop new network technologies. See IAB. The Internet Society. ISOC is a non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the Internet. Through its committees, such as the Internet Advisory Board (IAB) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), ISOC is responsible for developing and approving new Internet standards and protocols.
