Markup

The sequence of characters or other symbols that you insert at certain places in a text or word processing file to indicate how the file should look when it is displayed or to describe the document's logical structure. The markup indicators are often called tags. See HTML, SGML, SMIL, Tag, XHTML, XML.

Menu Bar

A graphical entity that appears on a web page to provide navigational information to the user. Also known as a navigation bar.

MBONE

The Multimedia Backbone. A virtual network over which sound and video transmissions can be multicast. Also known as the Multicast Internet. See Multicasting.

Meta Tags

Tags, placed in the header section of the HTML document, that contain information about your web page, such as keywords. Meta tags are read by a web server or search engine. The information in meta tags does not appear on the web page itself. See Keyword, Search Engine.

MIDI

Musical Instrument Digital Interface. A standard for recording and playing synthesized sounds on electronic instruments.

Modem

Acronym for modulator-demodulator. A device that enables a computer to transmit data over telephone lines. Computer information is stored digitally, whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analog waves. A modem converts between these two forms. The first graphical browser.

MOV

One of the video file extensions for Apple QuickTime.

Mozilla

Originally the name of Netscape Navigator, Mozilla now refers to the group of developers at Netscape responsible for overseeing the developments of the browser Navigator.

MP3

The file extension for MPEG audio layer 3. MP3 files are small so they can easily be transferred across the Internet. See MPEG.

Motion Picture Experts Group. An organization that develops standards for digital video and audio compression. See MP3.

Multicasting

The transmission of a video or audio stream from one sender to multiple users. See MBONE.

Multimedia

The use of animation, audio, video, and interactive elements on a website.
